Recently, researchers at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan demonstrated that fucoxanthin was effective in stimulating uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1) in laboratory animals. The UCP1 protein (also known as thermogenin) regulates the activity of a key gene responsible for the body’s temperature control and is responsible for stimulating the breakdown of stored fat. In these clinical studies on laboratory animals, fucoxanthin supplementation resulted in a 5 to 10 percent reduction in weight. It is likely that fucoxanthin increases the UCP1 protein by boosting the metabolic rate within the fat cell so that it burns more fat.
